Rhinestone Cowboy is Broadway Bound!
Award winning songwriter/artist/composer Larry Weiss, through an exclusive arrangement with Warner-Chappell Music Corp. is developing his song, "Rhinestone Cowboy", into a Broadway musical. Currently, Weiss is working on music and lyrics and co-authoring the book for the musical. Separate talks are also underway for development and ultimate production. Formal announcements will follow shortly. "I've always thought 'Rhinestone Cowboy' would make a great musical, Weiss says. "But it wasn't until recently, that the pieces began to fall together, and the project really developed. Glen Campbell had a number one hit with the song in 1975. Weiss had recorded and released the tune, and Campbell heard his version. After Campbell recorded it, and the song was soon nabbing awards for both artist and the writer. It won Campbell the ACM single of the year and the American Music Award Country Album of the year, and Weiss both CMA and ACM Country song of the year honors, as well as a Grammy nomination for Pop song of the year. Weiss went on to receive the NSAI Writer of the year award, an ASCAP POP and Country Merit Award, and an ASCAP Most Performed Song award. ASCAP proclaimed "Rhinestone Cowboy' one of the 10 most performed songs between 1974-84. And in 2001, 'Rhinestone Cowboy' was among the 10 most performed ASCAP Country standards of the 20th Century.
Weiss has also received honors for his #1 international hit, "Bend Me Shape Me" (American Breed), one of BMI's 2 million plus Performance Songs, which has become a major product endorsement song. Other classics include Jeff Beck's 'Hi Ho Silver Lining', Spooky Tooth's 'Evil Woman', Jerry Butler's 'Mr. Dream Merchant', and Eric Burdon's 'Help Me Girl'. Artists such as Trisha Yearwood, Michael Jackson, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton, T-Rex, Radiohead, Dionne Warwicke, Three Dog Night, Nat 'King' Cole, and Barry Manilow, who recorded Weiss' "Lay Me Down (Roll Me Out To Sea)" on three separate occasions. Weiss, who has sung themes for film and TV, was the voice heard on the popular 'Who's The Boss' television show. His compositions have also been included in the film scores for such features as Daddy Day Care, Deep Impact, My Name Is Joe, High School High, Wild America, and The Paper Chase.
